Tiling Problems

Common tile issues, their causes, and practical solutions to prevent damage and ensure lasting installations.

There are a number of reasons for a Tile to pop up, the most common of which are, a floor expansion or shrinkage, unclean subfloor or improperly mixed bonding mortar, moisture, and incorrect installation. This type of problem can be easily avoided by using proper tile adhesive techniques

What causes Tile to pop up or buckle?

Moisture in wet areas like bathroom, kitchen, swimming pool, and water tank. "Prevention is better than cure." These are common issues that can be avoided using proper installation. As once it happens, it is difficult to rectify the problem, and time and money-consuming.

Why moisture comes up through Tile?

There are many reasons that tiles won’t stay up, some of the common ones are: the plaster underneath isn't primed, the tiles have not been installed properly, grouting is done too early, incorrect tile grout is used, tiles have been fixed before the adhesive has been left to set. This type of de-bonding can be avoided by selecting the right tile adhesive and tile grout.

Why Tiles and Stones fall off the wall?

When you lay costly tiles and filling materials, it’s bound to crack over a period of time as it accumulates dirt and becomes dirty joints. This can be avoided by using non-flexible material; so it doesn’t absorb and fill the joints. Applying Epoxy grout is recommended as it has excellent water-resistance and is maintenance-free.

How to avoid dirty tile joints?

If your floor tiles are hollow sounding, you really need to take action. This situation will generally become obvious in traditional or conventional tile installation when wrong mortar is used under the tiles, or "dobbing" of the mortar is done early. Incorrect adhesives in wet areas or where the adhesive has not been suitable or not bonded with the tile will make the surface hollow when the mortar was left for too long and dried out.

Why does Tile sound hollow?

It is hard to determine the exact cause of a crack without an inspection but cracks in tile can be caused by several reasons. When the tile is bonded to the concrete, any movement in the concrete will cause a crack in that layer. If cracks occur in the concrete, they will reflect through the tile; this is called reflective cracking. This type of cracking can be easily avoided by using a proper tile adhesive.
